The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve (Approx: 4hrs)

  • Just a short drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria situated in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, is the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. With over 600 head of game, this is the perfect setting for admiring nature on your doorstep. More than thirty species of game, including three of the big five, can be viewed from open vehicles in the presence of an experienced guide.
  • These include Lion, White Rhino and Buffalo. Endangered species, such as wild dog have been reintroduced into the area. Cheetah, hippo, crocodile and more than 20 species of antelope will also form part of this experience. From a hide, the visitor has the opportunity to view and photograph the rare Cape Vulture. Leopards also occasionally traverse the area.
  • The best days to go are Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, be there by latest 11:00 as the lions are fed around 13:00 on these days. Cradle of Humankind world heritage site (Approx: 4 hours)

  • The cradle of humankind world heritage site encompassing Sterkfontein and Maropeng is unearthing a treasure trove of human skeletal remains; Australopithecus africanus and more recently Homo Naledi were discovered here. Enter the caves and the Maropeng information centre to journey back in time from the start of our universe, some 14-billion years ago, to the present and beyond.

Walking with Lions and Elephants

  • Elephant walk. Walk; interact and feed Elephants in the most beautiful surroundings for an incredible experience. There is also a centre for the rehabilitation of big cats and other interesting animals.
  • Lion walk. The lion walks and cub interaction give visitors the opportunity to interact with big cats in their natural environment which makes for some amazing photographic opportunities. The area is also home to over 130 bird species and is a paradise for bird watchers.
